WHEELING – Artworks is proud to present its new members in a show that will begin with an artistic walk on the first Saturday in December.

Donna Hirauk and Candace McCarthy joined the Gallery in 2021. They will be on hand to welcome visitors from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, December 4th. The reception is free and open to the public, this is the perfect time to take advantage of the best shopping season at the historic center market house.

Hirauk is an artist who came to her craft later in life. She worked for the United States Postal Service and was a florist for 32 years. His biography indicates that a friend of his suggested that he take a painting class and, in his own words, “I was addicted. Greg Siegwart, Artworks member, was her instructor and she still takes her classes at the Gallery. Her images are fresh, detailed, and have been very popular in her short time as a member.

McCarthy grew up in New Jersey. She started private art lessons when she was in high school. It was only in the 1990s that she continued her path towards painting.

Taking lessons from Bunny at Kirk’s Photo Shop, Cecy Rose and finally at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Candace explored all mediums including oils, watercolors and acrylics. His topic began with birds, animals, endangered species, barnyard creatures, and landscapes. She said: “I also like to put a little whimsy on my animals.”

A special noon event on Saturday, December 4 will include a ‘critique’ session, with artists from the region invited to bring their work in progress or completed to share in a relaxed and fun setting. Led by Bobbi Priebe and Greig Siegwart, this event was a popular way for artists to help each other with ideas and techniques. All artists are invited – you don’t need to be an Artworks member.

See Hirauk and McCarthy’s work with all the other member artists at the Wheeling Historic Center Market every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
